✅What is a Thermoelectric Wine Cooler?

A thermoelectric wine cooler has a solid-state heat pump that uses what is known as the Peltier effect to create a ‘heat flux’ between two different types of materials.

The major difference between a thermoelectric wine cooler and a more commonly found, compressor wine cooler is that thermoelectric units have no moving parts and hence are inherently very quiet when operating.

🍾What are the advantages of a thermoelectric wine cooler over a traditional compressor wine cooler?

There are several advantages to using a thermoelectric wine cooler over a compressor cooler, which includes that there are no moving parts, meaning that there is less chance that maintenance will be needed or the internal mechanism of the cooler will break.

Because there are no moving parts, they have an incredibly long life, with the majority of units being able to successfully run for 100,000+ hours.

Due to the fact, there are no moving parts, it means that the coolers are extremely quiet and vibration-free, which in turn keeps wine sediments undisturbed from movement. The only moving physical moving part is the internal fan.

Environmentally-friendly, as thermoelectric wine refrigerators do not contain any CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) or HCFCs (Hydro-Chlorofluorocarbons).

Temperature controls on a thermoelectric wine fridge are more accurate, and hence it can be monitored and controlled to within fractions of a degree.

Less expensive than compressor coolers to purchase

Thermoelectric cooling technology is especially suitable for freestanding, counter-top, and even smaller wine coolers that are positioned in a cool environment.

🥂What are the disadvantages of a thermoelectric wine cooler over a traditional compressor wine cooler?

Honestly, there really aren’t many disadvantages, but they still exist; Firstly thermoelectric coolers will not cool to below around (50°F or 10°C), but when it comes to wine cooling, you’re not looking to cool the bottles any less than 10C anyway.

Additionally, Thermoelectric coolers are best not used in locations that get warmer than around 80°F, and the reason for this is because the cooler works based on the Peltier effect, which makes large heat flux difficult. Therefore, you’ll only really be able to lower the temperature by around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you’re surrounding temperature (i.e where the thermoelectric wine cooler is stored) is around 76°F, you’ll be able to achieve a maximum cooling temperature of around 56°F (24°C).

So if you’ve made your decision to purchase a thermoelectric wine fridge, we advise storing it in the coolest location possible, like a wine cellar or basement.
